MEDIEVAL DOVECOTE, HEREFORDSHIRE – GRADE II* LISTED
Masonry Repairs and Reroofing
The circular rubble sandstone Medieval Dovecote is located in a field in a remote area of Herefordshire. The roof was in poor condition and the timber structure at the apex had almost been completely lost.
The building was on the Heritage At Risk Register (HARR). We were appointed to oversee a repairs project with grant aid from Historic England.
The work comprised structural repairs to the roof and reroofing with the lowest three courses being dressed sandstone slates and the remainder handmade plain tiles. The conical timber apex was repaired and reinstalled with oak structural timberwork covered with new riven oak shingles. Local repointing was carried out using a lime mortar. The completed work secured the future of the building and enabled its removal from the HARR.
